What Does Print-Ready Mean? A Beginner’s Guide from SW19 Design and Print

If you’re new to printing, all the technical terms—bleed, CMYK, stock—can sound like a foreign language. But don’t worry. At SW19 Design and Print, we make it simple.

Whether you’re ordering print for the first time or you’ve done it before and just need a refresher, this guide will help you understand the essentials—without the jargon.

What Does “Print-Ready” Mean?

Print-ready artwork” refers to a design file that’s correctly prepared for professional printing. That includes:

  • The correct dimensions and resolution (300dpi)
  • Fonts either outlined or embedded
  • Colours set to CMYK (not RGB)
  • A 3mm bleed around all edges
  • Important text and images kept inside the safe zone

Not sure how to set this up? Don’t worry—we offer free artwork checks and can guide you through it, whether you’re using Canva, Illustrator, Photoshop, or even PowerPoint.

Common Print Terms—Explained Simply

Here are some basic print terms we’re often asked about:

  • Bleed – A 3mm area that extends beyond your design to ensure there are no white edges when the job is trimmed.
  • Trim Size – The final size of your printed item after the bleed has been cut off. For example, an A5 leaflet trims to 148mm x 210mm.
  • Safe Zone – Keep all key content like logos or contact details at least 5mm inside the trim line so it doesn’t risk getting cut off.
  • CMYK – The four-colour printing process (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black). Files set up in RGB (used for screens) may print inaccurately.
  • Stock – This is simply the type of paper or card used. We offer everything from silk and gloss to uncoated and recycled options

Choosing the Right Paper or Card

The material you choose can make a big difference to how your print looks and feels. At SW19 Design and Print, we’ll help match your design to the right paper or card (stock) based on:

  • Durability needs
  • Finish (matte, gloss, silk, etc.)
  • Budget
  • Brand style

Some common examples:

  • Flyers & leaflets – Silk or gloss for a sharp, professional finish
  • Business cards – Thick, laminated stock for durability and style
  • Posters – High-quality coated paper for vibrant colours
  • Menus – Waterproof or laminated finishes for long-lasting use
